Let’s get clear on invisible braces
Gone are the days when straightening your teeth meant a very noticeable (and not-so-flattering) set of metal braces.
Thank you, modern dentistry!
We’ve now entered the era of discreet dental treatments where you can straighten your smile with invisible braces — or clear aligners, to be exact.
Clear aligner systems like Invisalign are taking our dental clinics by storm. These invisible braces are as effective as they are popular. And no matter where you are in your teeth straightening journey, clear braces will give you the confidence to flash your pearly whites with pride.
But what are invisible braces?
How do they work?
And are they just as good as traditional braces?
We’re here to answer all these questions and more. It’s time to get clear on invisible braces.

What are invisible braces?
Invisible braces. Clear braces. Colourless braces.
Yep, this barely-there teeth straightening treatment goes by *many* names. But they all refer to the same thing.
Basically, we’re talking about clear aligner trays that are made from smooth, thin plastic. These aligner trays are custom-moulded to your mouth and fit snugly over the top of your teeth. This means you’ll barely feel them and others will barely notice them.
Invisalign is the clear aligner system we offer at our Mascot dental clinic.
How do invisible braces work?
Invisible braces or clear aligners use a series of removable plastic trays to gently and gradually straighten your teeth.
The beauty of clear aligner treatments like Invisalign is that you can take out your trays to brush, floss, eat, drink or whenever you need some extra freedom.
But don’t launch into a 3-day-tray-vacay just yet! Your aligner trays must be worn over your teeth for at least 20 to 22 hours per day to be effective.
How long does invisible braces treatment usually take?
Every smile is unique… and so is your treatment time.
With Invisalign clear aligners, a full treatment can typically last anywhere from 6 months to 36 months. We know — that’s quite a large ballpark. But it all comes down to the complexity of your case.
If your teeth only have minor issues and require less movement, your treatment time will be a lot quicker. For less complex cases, there’s Invisalign Express which works to straighten your smile in a matter of months (yes, months!) The Express treatments use fewer sets of aligner trays and treatment time is generally around 3 to 6 months.
Psst! Heads up: not all clear aligners are created equal
We’ve seen so many clear aligner systems hit the market in recent years — including online companies that offer at-home solutions. But beware, there’s a lot of false promises and misinformation out there.
If you’re feeling a little confused by your options, never fear! We’re here to help you make a more informed decision about your clear aligner treatment. Check out this blog where we compare Invisalign vs. Smile Direct Club. The differences might surprise you!
